The London P&I Club sets sail with the latest Microsoft .NET technology

5 Mar 2012
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dataline Software has provided The London P&I Club with an economic way of migrating its core business application to Microsoft .NET

The London P&I Club is a mutual protection and indemnity association for ship-owners worldwide. Its day-to-day operations are overseen by A Bilbrough & Co Ltd, a dedicated management company. Bilbrough has teams of P&I professionals operating from offices in London, Hong Kong and Piraeus that provide advice and a responsive service to the Club membership.

Bilbrough’s legacy core system was originally developed in 1997 using Centura Team Developer, a technology that the company wished to supplant with the Microsoft .NET platform. This aspiration was driven by a number of factors: a lack of support, the problem of finding skilled Centura developers, and not least the need for it come into line with the other .NET apps within the company.

Bilbrough contacted Dataline Software, Ice Tea Group’s UK Porting Partner, after learning of their experience in migrating Team Developer applications to .NET.

Ice Tea’s Ice Porter toolkit (http://www.iceteagroup.com/Porting.aspx) has been used by its partners to successfully migrate over 1000 Gupta/Centura applications for more than 500 organisations around the world.

Dataline provided a free initial assessment confirming the feasibility of migrating the system which was found to contain 280,000 SAL items and 110 Report Builder reports. Bilbrough then asked Dataline to carry out a detailed analysis and proof of concept based on their application.

"That convinced us that Dataline’s migration solution offered a much lower-risk, more economic and quicker route to .NET for our system compared to a re-write" remarked Bilbrough’s IT Manager, Rob Magee.

Dataline began the port in April and completed on schedule in September.

"This project followed the plan to the letter in terms of both cost and timescale" commented Magee "and because the process preserved the look, feel and behaviour of the original application, we have not had to retrain our users for the new system".

John Cuthbert of Dataline Software said: "With the application migrated to .NET, Bilbrough is now in a position to take advantage of a wide array of components and resources available to the .NET community to continue its development. We are delighted to have assisted Bilbrough in giving the application a bright new future."

About The London P&I Club (http://www.londonpandi.com)
The London P&I Club is one of the world’s leading Protection and Indemnity Associations. Demonstrations of this new product in action can be seen throughout the day at this month's Ambition 2011 Conference, the premier annual event for UK ambulance services, their partner agencies and suppliers.

Designed for use in a classroom, auditorium or over the internet, TrainStation enables a course trainer to wirelessly broadcast questions - known as injects - to delegates' computers. The delegates then use TrainStation to compose and send their answers back to the trainer, to be displayed for everyone to view and discuss. The process is then repeated for further injects as the course progresses.

By carrying out exercises and syndicated discussions in this way, the delegates:

Are encouraged to think independently rather than relying on the input of others,

Have immediate interaction with the presentation,

Can be tested by the facilitator and encouraged to produce original thoughts.

Dataline will be unveiling TrainStation at the annual Ambition 2011 Conference - which this year is being held at The International Centre, Telford on the 22nd and 23rd June. For a demonstration of how TrainStation exercises can improve your training material, visit Dataline Software on stand A12.

Monitor’s Sentinel Plus software suite goes .NET

12 November 2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dataline Software successfully migrates UK's market leading alarm monitoring system to Microsoft .NET

Monitor Computer Systems Ltd. has been a premier supplier of alarm monitoring systems to the UK market and abroad since its founding in 1984. Its customers include major security companies, local authorities, telecoms companies, banks, building societies and police forces

Its Sentinel Plus software suite provides a single integrated platform for the monitoring of alarm panels, video systems, environmental monitoring, GPS asset tracking and lone worker devices. Developed over the last 25 years, Monitor Computer Systems’ share of the alarm monitoring market has steadily grown to a dominant position, securing 55% of the market in the UK and Ireland today.

Originally developed using the Gupta/Centura Team Developer software development toolset, Monitor’s IT Development Manager, Jason Williams explained that while the platform was a technically advanced development environment in its day, the toolset now lagged behind the Microsoft Visual Studio offering in terms of productivity, modern UI options and available components. “It’s also becoming more and more difficult to find good developers with relevant experience” said Williams “and when we do, they tend to come at a premium”. So following a detailed evaluation and proof of concept Dataline was commissioned to migrate the Sentinel Plus system to C#.NET using the Ice Tea Group’s market leading Ice Porter toolset.

“Dataline was able to demonstrate a proof of concept running against our Informix database in a couple of weeks. That convinced us that migration was a practical option and much cheaper and quicker that a re-write from the ground up” Williams noted. John Cuthbert at Dataline Software said “The project was unusual in the number of third party components and controls the application uses to interface to a wide variety of monitoring devices, but the migration went very smoothly and we got an excellent conversion rate with the Ice Porter tools. Jason and his team can now move forward with their plans to modernise and extend the system with greater flexibility and a much larger pool of resources at their disposal”.

About Dataline Software (http://www.dataline.co.uk)

Dataline Software delivers bespoke software to businesses of all sizes and has a twenty-five year track record of delivering projects on time and to budget.

Dataline delivers wireless software to help train Ambulance Hazardous Area Response Teams

27 October 2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hazardous Area Response Teams are specially recruited and trained personnel who provide the ambulance response to major incidents. By turning a concept in to reality in a short timeframe, and fostering a close working relationship - Dataline Software has produced a cost effective product that exceeded HARTs original expectations.

Hazardous Area Response Teams (HART) are specially recruited and trained personnel who provide the ambulance response to major incidents. They provide specialist medical care during patient extrication - often involving hazardous materials and hazardous environments. These may occur as a result of an accident or may be the result of deliberate actions.

HART regularly conduct training courses which take the form of table-top exercises. Teams of three or four candidates are asked questions about how best to cope with particular scenarios.

This process was traditionally carried out on paper or white board and HART wished to encourage more discussion within each group and to reduce the possibility of one team using the input of other teams.

HART identified a solution where questions and responses could be transmitted and gathered electronically - and discussed their requirement with Dataline Software in Brighton. In less than one month - using agile methodology - Dataline developed a wireless collaboration system to fulfil HART’s requirements. The result is a system that is multifunctional and not only suited to exercises, but also workshops and incident debriefs.

Wireless Table Top System

The system was designed and implemented so that the course trainer is able to present questions to the computers allocated to the teams of trainees. Each team is then able to compose and submit their answers/responses back to the trainer independently of the other groups.

The responses can then be displayed on a projector for all the teams to view and discuss, but only after all the teams have completed their submissions. The questions and responses are exchanged via wireless connections between the trainer's and delegate groups' laptops.

By posing questions in this way, the trainee teams:

Are encouraged to think independently rather than relying on the input of others,

Have immediate interaction with the presentation,

Can be tested by the facilitator and encouraged to produce original thoughts.

Since its release, the system has demonstrated its mobility and has been successfully used at a number of training events around the UK. Due to the flexibility within the system the exercise facilitator has the ability to fully test candidates and the improvement in candidate learning has been significant.

The HART programme maintains a consistent evaluation process and the product has been rated highly by candidates and end users. Of note other organisations who conduct similar training sessions are showing significant interest in this cost effective system.

Summary

The system was developed in line with the customers requirements and Dataline was able to provide valuable support by way of suggestions and proposals to improve the product. By turning the concept in to reality within a short timeframe, and fostering a close working relationship - Dataline has produced a cost effective product that exceeded HARTs expectations.

About Dataline Software (http://www.dataline.co.uk)

Dataline Software delivers bespoke software to businesses of all sizes and has a twenty-five year track record of delivering projects on time and to budget.

Dataline launches a new version of its unique product for web enabling databases

15 April 2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

This month Dataline Software proudly announces a new version of i5 Studio - a powerful web developers’ toolkit suited for rapid application development. Over fifty new features have been introduced in version 3.5, to make the development environment richer, faster and easier to use.

When work started on the new version eighteen months ago, Dataline identified three enhancement “pillars” – key features crucial for a modern web development project:

Easy integration with Ajax and jQuery, using just-in-time CSS generation.

Seamless integration with Microsoft Visual Studio, via a native .NET programming interface.

Effective indexing by spiders such as Google or Bing, using a new permalink feature.

These three core features have all been completed and are included in the new release. Further details of these and other enhancements in version 3.5 can be found online at http://www.dataline.co.uk/scripts/dataline.dll?page=producti5.newfeatures35

Mike Robinson, Technical Director of Dataline is keen to point out that an underlying design goal was that the product remained easy to use, saying "We wanted to stay true to our ideal that building web apps should not just be the domain of highly skilled software developers, but that IT literate users should be empowered to web-enable their data too.".

As a result, the point-and-click wizards in the new version of i5 can still transform SQL data into interactive web pages in less than a minute.

Existing versions of i5 already underpin a wide range of business applications worldwide. These installations can be upgraded free of charge, provided that customers are signed up to Dataline's Annual License Subscription (ALS) package. New users can discover how i5 can accelerate time to market by downloading a free version from http://www.dataline.co.uk/downloads/

About Dataline Software (http://www.dataline.co.uk)

Dataline Software delivers bespoke software to businesses of all sizes and has a twenty-five year track record of delivering projects on time and to budget. It's portfolio of products includes i5®, a unique tool for publishing SQL databases on the web.
